Who's Hot:Megan Abubo, #1 FEMALE SURFER IN THE US Talk about making waves… Hawaiian Megan Abubo is quickly rising to the top of women's professional surfing. After only six years on the World Championship Tour (WCT), twenty-three year old Megan is already the number one ranked female surfer in the United States and is seeded number two in the world for the upcoming 2001 WCT tour. It was Megan's 1999 performance on the WCT tour that first showcased her talent and potential in the water. It was then that Megan won her first World Tour victory at the French T&C Lacanau Pro. Megan's first world championship title of the 2000 tour was obtained at the All-Hawaiian SunSmart Women’s event at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia in April. Megan found herself with another first place trophy at the Billabong MSF Pro at Jeffrey's Bay in July, beating Australia’s Trudy Todd, the defending champion. Megan was also the only woman besides Layne Beachley to even hold the number one spot during the past two seasons. Megan says that she prefers her waves to be 4-6 foot right-hand point breaks. She lists Haleiwa, J-Bay and Bells Beach as her favorite breaks. Megan is best known for her forehand snap. Her interests, however, are not solely limited to surfing. When off of her board, this young athlete, nicknamed Bubo and Megs by her friends, enjoys music, politics, reading and spending time with her family. Megan also enjoys playing the ukulele and going out for sushi or Mexican food. When asked what her words of wisdom are to her fans, Megan replied "Live your dreams." So far, it looks like she is doing a good job of following her own advice! |
