C.J. HOBGOOD IS NAMED THE "MOST IMPROVED" SURFER ON THE MEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR (WCT)

A product of the same Florida surf that spawned Kelly Slater and Lisa Andersen, C.J. Hobgood is poised to become a powerhouse on the WCT. Born July 6, 1979
21 year old C.J. has made quite a splash on the WCT over the last two years.

Surfing since he was six, when his father would push him into a wave and C.J. would ride it to shore, he made a name for himself in the East Coast National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA). Along with his twin brother, Damien, C.J. dominated his age group divisions throughout his youth. Among his early accomplishments are a second place finish in the 1997 NSSA Juniors’ Rankings behind his twin brother, and the NSSA Mens’ title the same year.

After finishing the 1998 World Qualifying Series (WQS) season ranked 11th, he qualified for the 1999 WCT, where he finished 18th and was named the WCT rookie of the year. Now, in his third year on the WCT, C.J. has scraped his way to a 7th place ranking, fueled by his first-ever WCT win at the 2000 Hossegor Rip Curl Pro. As if winning a world tour event was not sufficient evidence of C.J.’s surfing abilities, it must be noted that, in order to win the Hossegor Pro, he had to defeat current world champion Sunny Garcia (HI) in the semi-final and then number-2 ranked Luke Egan (AUS) in the final.

At the conclusion of the 2000 tour, Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) named C.J. the most improved men’s surfer on the WCT. He was awarded a $3,000 check in honor of his accomplishment.
