BILLABONG JUNIOR
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FACT SHEET
WHAT: The Billabong Junior World Championships 2000, a one-off
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2000 Junior World Tour event
that determines the annual Billabong Junior World Champion on the World
Championship Tour (WCT).
WHEN: A 10-day waiting period from October 31 to November 10, 2000.
WHERE: Makaha on the West Side of Oahu Island, Hawaii.
WHO: The hottest junior surfers in the world. In order for surfers
to compete in this series, they must be 19 years old or younger as of 31st
December 1999. They cannot turn 21 during the 2000 tour year.
ENTRY: 48 contestants will compete in the two-day event. Selection
is determined by the top six-rated competitors from each of the seven ASP
Regional Tours, plus six wildcard invitees. The seven ASP regions are
Australasia, South America, Hawaii, Africa, Asia, North America and
Europe.
WILDCARD INVITEES: Joel Parkinson (Australian, defending Junior
World Champion), Tiago Pires (Portuguese trials winner), Dustin Cuizon
(Hawaiian, 1999 Junior World Championships finalist), Craig Wilson
(Highest placed Hawaiian trialist from Makaha), and two Makaha local
surfers advancing from a pre-contest trials heat.
FORMAT: The competition format will be 48 contestants entered, and
will be run to standard ASP 2000 Junior WCT event rules. |
